LEADERS WHO DEVELOP THIS ONE QUALITY ARE CONSISTENTLY SUCCESSFUL

......How Do YOU Get it?....it’s not High IQ!

In world-wide performance management studies* regarding leaders of Fortune 500’s, non-profits, government agencies, military, and small business, it’s shown that people who possess high scores in Emotional Intelligence (EQ) represent 92% of successful leaders yet only 26% of those successful leaders possess high IQ. Leaders high in Emotional Intelligence are much more successful than those who have lower EQ.

The Big News is that EQ is the Determinate of Leadership Success…not IQ!

Success* in this regard is defined as a leader who scores high in:

  1. Consistent achievement of high quality productivity and outcomes.
  2. High ratings in leadership by direct reports, customers, and peers.
  3. High indexes of a sense of well being experienced by the leader.

*Leadership Success =

High Quality Performance and Outcomes
+
High Ratings in Leadership by direct reports, customers and peers
+
High Sense of Well-Being

Noteworthy, organization development research also shows that even though leaders may have high IQ but rate low in EQ, they will not be (generally) as successful as people who may have average IQ but score high in EQ !

Additionally, it was found that people having only average IQ and with little or no experience in a given field, but having high Emotional Intelligence, will over time, out perform a person with high IQ and more experience in the field but who shows a low Emotional Intelligence score.

Leaders with High IQ
Low Emotional Intelligence
Experience in Field
Not as successful over time
Leaders with Average IQ
High Emotional
Intelligence
Little Experience in the Field Will outperform over time

From the time these findings were first published in the Harvard Business Review https://hbr.org/2004/01/what-makes-a-leader by Daniel Goleman, author of the best seller, “Working with Emotional Intelligence”, many Fortune 500’s, US military and government agencies have invested in Emotional Intelligence organization development programs by having their top leaders coached in developing Emotional Intelligence.

And for good reason! Studies show that, while it is very difficult to raise the IQ of an individual (what you got is what you get!), your Emotional Intelligence score is relatively simple to elevate through executive coaching, leadership training and specific experiential modalities, such as simulated experiences. The great news is that the data points to a ‘direct correlation in raising a person’s EQ score to increases in bottom-line productivity and heightened sense of well–being ’. So what is Emotional Intelligence anyway?

Maybe you’ve noticed people who just seem to be “on-center” in their lives. Even when bad things happen, they seem to be able to roll with the punches and come out on top. They never seem to be reactive or angry over setbacks or obstacles. They’re calm when things go wrong and they manage to steer a clear path when everyone else is wandering in circles.  More often than not, they are already in positions of leadership. That doesn’t happen by chance.

People with high social and emotional intelligence (S+EI) advance farther and much more quickly in life and in business, even if they are not as cognitively intelligent or as formally educated as others from the same background and circumstances. They are masters of creating relationships, and possess networks of people who want to be around them and are eager to help. Because of this, they are able to accomplish more, whether it’s gaining support for a multi-million dollar business project or finding volunteers for a scout camping trip. People with high EQ are just more effective people!

EQ is a measure of your social and emotional intelligence. It is measured through a series of questions that uncover your proficiency and attitudes in 26 core areas that make up emotional intelligence. The higher your EQ, the more likely you are to be in a leadership position and achieve success.

26 Competencies

Social and Emotional Intelligence is comprised of 26 “competencies” – areas of proficiency that embrace the skills necessary to achieve success. These competencies apply across all industries, organizations, hierarchical level, and functional levels. The competencies themselves are broken up into four quadrants, two that involve yourself and two that involve how you interact with others.

The Four Quadrants

The first step in building Social and Emotional Intelligence (S+EI) is Self-Awareness. Without being aware of your emotions and how you react because of them, you cannot begin to manage those emotions or recognize the emotions that drive others. How you manage yourself is the second quadrant. Behavioral self-control, integrity, a bias for action, empathy and several more important characteristics comprise this category. Awareness of others is the third
quadrant. How you manage your relationships with others is the fourth quadrant.
Awareness of others and understanding your role within organizations and groups will help you to read, interact, and motivate the people who ultimately will help you reach objectives and/or overcome impediments. Emotional intelligence gives us the tools to manage ourselves, people and situations, to draw out the best in people, to make their lives better and, in doing so, make our own lives better.

Why does EQ MATTER?

Emotional Intelligence is the central factor that truly determines personal success. In the business world, the lack of Emotional Intelligence has a quantifiable effect on the bottom line.  Emotional intelligence, according to the research, is also responsible for 80% of our success in life.

Bottom Line: Being deficient in several characteristics of Social and Emotional Intelligence is costing you in money, time, relationships, and most importantly, your health and happiness.

Assessing and developing your own EQ through leadership training is simple and pays off in very big dividends according to research.

A skilled and experienced EQ Executive Coach can provide powerfully effective methods that will help you swiftly develop measurably higher levels of Emotional Intelligence.

An intelligent thought would be to pursue this subject further while an emotionally intelligent action is to feel compelled to take definitive action in that direction now.
